Mission Statement

The aims and objectives of JKS Scotland are to foster, administer and advance the art of traditional Shotokan Karate.

Our goal is to teach, motivate, educate and guide our students and instructors while promoting exemplary ethics in Karate-Do.

We promise to do this through regular training of the highest order, course and grading events, special courses, and of course, competitions for both junior and senior alike.

Our classes are tailored for both young children, up through to adults karate.

Established in 2001 by Instructor Robert Steggles, JKS Edinburgh holds classes that cater to all ages from children 4 years and up, to adults of any age and ability.

We are affiliated to the Japan Karate Shotorenmei (JKS) Scotland, the largest and most successful traditional Karate association in Scotland, with direct affiliation to JKS Headquarters in Japan.

Japan Karate Shotorenmei is an international organisation that teaches authentic Shotokan Karate from Japan, as taught by the late Sensei Tetsuhiko Asai, 10th Dan (1935-2006).

Classes for All!

We hold classes for both children and adults, with our Tigers Classes catering to 4-6 year olds and our main classes catering for 6 years old up.

You do not have to be fit to start, as long as you are in good health your fitness and skill level will gradually increase through time and training.

World Class Tuition

No other association can offer the opportunities or level of instruction that you will find within JKS Scotland.

We work as a co-operative with JKS affiliated countries worldwide to foster and develop JKS karate within the UK and hold regular courses and seminars with international instructors and competitors from the Karate world, working to ensure the worlds best tuition is available to all of our students.

This includes regular classes with world champion level instructors from JKS Japan’s Honbu Dojo.

We also offer opportunities to train in Japan once per year for those interested in making the trip.

Fully Certified

Our instructors are fully insured and certified coaches through the Scottish Karate Governing Body (SKGB), the only recognised governing body for Karate in Scotland, and are Enhanced Disclosure Scotland Certified.

JKS Scotland maintains a high standard of practice and tuition throughout the association and has a strong competition squad in Kata (Pre-arranged Forms) and Kumite (Free Sparring).

With many title winners within our association ranging from club level wins all the way up to World title winners.
